Group K of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K features Portugal, Colombia, Uzbekistan and the Intercontinental Playoff 1 winner. It is a group with genuine quality at the top and fascinating debut stories. Here is a complete preview.
THE TEAMS
Portugal
FIFA Ranking: Around 5 to 8
Portugal are a strong contender for the knockout stages and potentially beyond. Cristiano Ronaldo has been a dominant figure in Portuguese football for two decades. His role in 2026 depends on his continued involvement at international level. The squad has enough quality without him to compete. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias are among the best in the world at their positions. Portugal play two of their group games in Houston.
Colombia
FIFA Ranking: Around 11 to 15
Colombia are one of South America's most entertaining teams. Their qualifying campaign showed a squad with attacking creativity and technical quality throughout. They did not qualify for 2022 which makes their 2026 presence all the more impactful. Colombia bring the kind of possession-based, high-energy football that can threaten anyone.
Uzbekistan
FIFA Ranking: Around 70 to 80
Uzbekistan make their World Cup debut in 2026. They qualified through the AFC (Asian) route. Their squad plays in Asian leagues with some European-based players. Facing Portugal and Colombia in their first World Cup is a huge test. But simply qualifying represents a milestone moment for Central Asian football.
Intercontinental Playoff 1 Winner
One of: DR Congo, Jamaica or New Caledonia
DR Congo are the highest-ranked of the three and advance directly to the IC playoff final. Jamaica and New Caledonia play a semifinal. Whoever wins gets placed in Group K. DR Congo would be the most competitive opponent given their African league experience.
THE FIXTURES
MD1: Portugal vs. IC PO-1 Winner, June 17, Houston
MD1: Uzbekistan vs. Colombia, June 17, Mexico City
MD2: Portugal vs. Uzbekistan, June 23, Houston
MD2: Colombia vs. IC PO-1 Winner, June 23, Guadalajara

THE KEY STORYLINE
Portugal vs. Colombia in the final matchday on June 27 is the group decider. Two of the most technically gifted squads in the tournament play to determine who tops the group. Both teams should comfortably advance. But first place carries a more favorable bracket position in the Round of 32.
Uzbekistan vs. Colombia on June 17 in Mexico City is also compelling. Colombia need to win to assert themselves at the top of the group table from the start. Uzbekistan will defend hard and look for counter-attacks.
WHO ADVANCES
Portugal and Colombia are the clear top two. The battle for third place is between Uzbekistan and the IC PO-1 winner. Uzbekistan's debut against Colombia will give a sense of whether they can compete at this level.
PORTUGAL'S TWO HOUSTON GAMES
Portugal play their first two group games at NRG Stadium in Houston. Houston's retractable roof and 72,000 capacity create an excellent environment for top-level football. With Cristiano Ronaldo or a strong squad behind him, both of those Houston nights could be extraordinary to attend.
